Why echo hello as stdin to your stty ? stty doesn't like stdin in general. On a debian 6 machine I get this: $ echo hello | stty stty: standard input: Inappropriate ioctl for device $ echo | stty stty: standard input: Inappropriate ioctl for device $ stty speed 38400 baud; line = 0; eol = M-^?; eol2 = M-^?; -brkint ixany /Martin
