I just wrote out the dataset "can.exo", as an Exodus dataset.  I then read it 
back in, and it remains a multiblock dataset.  The Exodus writer is only 
available on the trunk, however, and will be released this spring as ParaView 
3.6.

Sad but apparently true. Maybe you want to add a feature request. It should 
really not be that hard as XML is hirarchical.

We solved the issue by implementing a reader plugin for our format (which is 
written in a own HDF5 dialect).

This has limitations, therefore I'm still interested in exporting parview data.

I believe that an extension of the VTK and Paraview (pvd) file format can only 
come from kiteware to make it a standard.
