Christine, I import HDF5 files into ParaView by first converting them to VTK (which ParaView will natively read). To do this I use the 'h5tovtk' converter that is supplied as part of the 'h5utils' package ( http://ab-initio.mit.edu/wiki/index.php/H5utils). This may or may not work for you -- I seem to recall I had one h5 file that didn't want to cooperate. But for most of my data it's fine.
