I've compiled a generic version of Mesa (using the basic make target linux-x86-64), and built Paraview 3.6.1 with the generic Mesa (as shown at http://www.cmake.org/Wiki/Setting_up_a_ParaView_Server#OSMesa_support) on the Fedora 12 machine with the label problem. The attached screenshot shows that there is no longer any problem with the labels.

So, thanks for the tip -- using software rendering works. Any hope to get hardware rendering to work with the intel video driver?
