Curiously, if I rerun cmake in the Build/paraview/paraview-build directory using these same exact flags, cmake seems to complete correctly as does the build.

The variables that get propagated to ParaView don't have necessarily the same names. (I've listed the ones that are not using the same name) -DMPI_CXX_LIBRARIES:STRING=${PV_MPI_CXX_LIBRARIES} -DMPI_C_LIBRARIES:STRING=${PV_MPI_C_LIBRARIES} -DMPI_EXTRA_LIBRARY:STRING=${PV_MPI_EXTRA_LIBRARY} -DMPI_LIBRARY:FILEPATH=${PV_MPI_LIBRARY} Therefore you may need to duplicate some values and use PV_XXX as key. Not sure that's intended, but I tried to set -DPV_MPI_CXX_LIBRARIES:STRING="a b c d" and it properly get pushed to the ParaView CMakeCache.txt.
