I'm going ahead and sending everything I have so far. I'll be happy to split it up (putting some of the switch-related changes in their own patch), as I suggested, but at least this way, you'll have something to comment on. For example, since I get the impression that the FAT12 cases can indeed happen, I'll end up doing something more than PED_ASSERT(0,... for the few that remain.
