git 1.8 was originally released over six years ago [1]. See if you can find a more recent version. For instance, Debian stable currently has git 2.11 [2].

Looks like the git "-C" option is not in the latest version of git.
Initializing the password store as a git repository fails:

$ pass git init
Unknown option: -C
