I actually find it's better on my Mac - I used to be good for one or two beachballs a week in Thunderbird, sometimes more, with Enigmail. 0.9.6 has yet to beachball on me. I actually went as far as starting to switch over to Mail.app because it was pissing me off so much.
Getting back to the original topic myself :) - what everybody else said. gpg or TrueCrypt.
