I looked at an incident recently for one of our staff members. They had a family member responding to an ad on Craigslist for a rental. The person sent an email to the victim advising them to go to a "credit and background" checking website to pre-qualify. The website was registered a month before in the Bahamas. Of course they wanted PII. Local FBI confirmed it was a scam. I used the incident for a "security awareness" email to the employees.
I would recommend cautioning your family and coworkers to the scams. Examples like this will get their attention faster than the "change your password often" speeches.
