I do not know if any books dedicated to the subject but there are a few that touch upon it as part of the larger file forensics discipline. One I would consider to be on the Novice/Intermediate level is http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Forensic-Analysis-Toolkit-Second/dp/1597494224 .
As far as free i would start with some of the forensics blogs.
