Thank you very much to everyone on the list, I greatly appreciate the insight, 
particularly given that my question was rather vague.

A board such as the Alix2d2 - http://pcengines.ch/alix2d2.htm

plus a Mini-PCIe FireWire card looks to be a very good option, certainly good 
enough to prototype with.
