PE 417: ERGONOMICS ASSESSMENT

Objective: to gain a good fit of worker and job.

Poor fit will cause problems maybe not today, but down the road.

Indicators of problems:

Pain, tingling, swelling, other discomforts

Back, shoulder, neck strains

Hand, wrist, other problems

Actions to watch for

  1. Trends = does it happen the same way frequently = look at data in reports of incidents etc
  2. CTD’s = cumulative trauma disorders = may take a while to show up
  3. Sick days increase
  4. Turnover rates = are people quitting or leaving or refusing to do things
  5. Work station changes = makeshifts by workers indicate problems
  6. Product quality = decreasing? Why
  7. Repetitive tasks = manual handling excess will usually result in CTD’s
  8. Posture = do they look normal = neutral = not just sitting, but hand position and other body parts
  9. Hand force = how much needed and position
  10. Mechanical stress = resting arms on table edge
  11. Grasping or pinching devices = similar to hand force
  12. Extreme temperatures = cold or hot means body must adjust
  13. Vibrating tools = can tool absorb so not transferred to operator

Materials Handling = better to design job properly than try to train people to do it correctly, so avoid the following:

  1. Lift from floor
  2. Lift heavy weights/bulky objects
  3. Lift while twisting
  4. Lift above shoulders/seated
  5. Push/pull loads
  6. Bend then lift

Work spaces factors

  1. Work platforms
  2. Equipment controls
  3. Work surfaces
  4. Leg room

Posture in the neutral position

  1. Body relaxed
  2. Arms loose
  3. Wrists straight
  4. Shoulders relaxed
  5. Elbows close to body
  6. Spine straight
  7. Neck straight

Standing use

  1. Anti-fatigue mats
  2. Work surface below elbows
  3. Elevate one foot = takes stress off back

Sitting

  1. Seat surface = cloth as oppose to allowing sliding of butt
  2. Woven fabric
  3. Unrestricted movement swivel etc.
  4. Rounded slightly elevated front
  5. Knees bent
  6. Seat height adjustable
  7. Foot rests
  8. Lower back support = curved with lumbar support

Displays and controls

  1. Displays grouped together
  2. Symbols easy to see
  3. Controls grouped with display
  4. Space between controls
  5. Controls permit movement
  6. Cowls to prevent glare
  7. Hand controls emphasizing/allowing for precision and speed = use amplifier to provide gain
  8. Foot controls provide greater effort if high force required
  9. No FAST PACED decision requirements

Minimize hand stress by using neutral position that doesn’t require high force or repetitive tasks

Tool Guidelines

  1. Training = so worker does it correct
  2. Handles = bent, squeezing screw drivers,
  3. Wrists straight
  4. Bars or grip switches
  5. Handles extend past palm
  6. Pinch points
  7. Pressure on back of hand rather than fingers
  8. Balanced power tools
  9. Excessive vibration

Whole body vibration

  1. Springs or compressive pads
  2. Structural materials = designed in
  3. Floor mats
  4. Seat cushions/springs = air cushioned seats or cabs for over road trucks

Video display terminals

  1. Minimize glare = cowls, smoky screens
  2. Tilt monitors = at or below eye level
  3. Adjust screen
  4. Adjust distance
  5. Adjust keyboards and seats = position according to reach and allow position change

Lighting

  1. Adequate, but not excessive
  2. Adjustable blinds
  3. No direct or reflected light
  4. Shade light sources
  5. Reflect light down
  6. Additional light at work stations = avoid shadows
  7. Written materials easy to read = size and color
  8. Written instructions perpendicular (up and down) to viewer
