Hi Teri, all DVD machines whether they are recorders or players are menu driven. as far as a dvd being accessible, it depends on the individual dvd itself. first of all, a dvd when placed in a machine brings up the menu screen. you press the play button and hope that the dvd starts playing. you have to be able to go up, down, left and right in order to access different things like the chapter, trailer and so forth. the cheapest recorder I know of is about $190.00 or so. as far as wide screen, that is solely an option that you select just like 5.1 surround sound for example. remember too that not all dvd's recorded in a recorder will not play in all players.
