Thanks for all that.

After reading the manual, I find the way to do it is to use tab to cycle between left, right, and both channels, then select the part you want and then copy or paste it or manipulate it.

You can go to whatever part of the file you want with the arrow, ctrl-arrow,
pgup ctrl-pgup, and pg-down, ctrl-pg-down keys. Adding ctrl means more
movement. You can also play the file and hit return where you want to stop.
You can also use ctrl-g (goto), followed by time in hours, minutes, seconds,
and fractions of seconds down to 3 decimal places. Tab moves you between
channels--both, left, and right--repeats. Find the segment you want and use
the keys to move you to where it ends.. Copy it to the clipboard. Close
the file you're using or make a new window and paste your file in that.
Alt-, n, to make a new window. You might need to use the ctrl-n to set the
sound attributes to mono. Which of these methods you use depends on what
you want to do.
Hope this gets you on your way. There is a sf-users list if you need more
detailed info.
