Hi Reta. The simplest way to compress the files to a smaller size is to either use WMA or OG format rather than MP3. You could also reduce the bit rate to a value that you're happy with.
Again, you just need to be mindful as to what you want to do with your collection in the future. If you want to use a portable MP3 player you'd need to check compatibility. If you wanted to burn an audio CD from your collection to play in a high end hi-fi system, you're going to want a full frequency range so nothing less than 256kbps will do this. However, if you're not likely to do either of these, 128kbps could sound great through your PC speakers.
