recording with sound card

Thanks, Harry, and Rob.  Unfortunately, I don't have anything in my volume 
properties called system mixer, or stereo, even though I think that I might 
have had it several reformattings ago.  What shows up is the following: cd 
audio, line in, and microphone.  Would a new sound card solve the problem, 
or is it the machine that I have - an hp?  Thoughts are most welcome.
