The answer to both quiestions is yes. The line-in on the sound card is meant
for preamp and equivalent outputs.
There are several disk clean-up programs out there. The one I'm using which
costs a$45 is called Wave Corrector. Works very fast and takes minimal
adjustments which are all transparent. It does have inumerable graphic ways
of cleaning individual blocks, butI've never found them necessary so I don't
care that they're not accessible
