and I maintain that 96k mp3, for Podcasting use, is just fine. Yes it's not
the greatest. Yes, it's not perfect. But hundreds of Podcasters, blind and
sighted are using these things and I've read many of the podcasting forums,
and not one single person has complained about sucky audio quality.
You have to think about where your audience is listening to these
recordings. Lots of them are on busses, trains and other forms of
transportation. With the outside noise, do you really think people are
gonna say oh! listen, he's sounding awful, he's got problems with his low
frequency range!
or, man he doesn't have a lot of highs in there.
If you're listening on a big expensive stereo system then yes, you'll
notice that, especially if your ear is trained to pick up those problems.
Now, to answer TJ's questions on recording.
This baby is menu driven. I've got the IFP-899, and getting to the voice
recorder is quite simple. Most likely when you turn it on you'll land in
the mp3 player. If you hold the iriver facing you, you'll see 3 buttons on
it, and a little joystick type of thing on the underside of the unit more
towards the right.

So to bring up the menu, you would find the third button to the right and
hold it down for about 5 seconds. Maybe even less than that, but we'll use
5 seconds as a good round number.
Now the menu should be up.
Next find the joystick, and if your 799 is anything like the 899, you'll
need to press the joystick to the right 2 times. Once to get to the fm
tuner, not sure if the 799 has that? and then once again to land in the
voice recorder.
In order to set the recording options, you will need some form of sighted
help, because initially, it's set to 32k, 2250 hertz mono. and that
*really* does lose.
So if you can set that up, i think you could produce some *reasonable*
recordings.
