All sorted, not the CMOS, not the sound card drivers it was some file in
sound forge that was corrupted. Reinstalled S.F and all sorted.

before reinstalling windows xp I would reset the cmos on the mother board by
removing the battery. Everything you have should auto detect after that
though you may have to restart the machine twice. Make sure you have a
sighted person there just in case if you are blind. If that doesn't work I
would reinstall the sound card drivers. That is why I have a set of USB
speakers in case something like this goes wrong.
