Bryan: you can do this with envelope fading, but that doesn'ty seem to work too well. What you could do, and this is a rather stupid workaround, might be to create a file of nothing but silence of just a bit over the length of the file, then just mix it on top of the original file using fade-on-edges, and change the destination volume to -6 DB or lower.
