I consider Raleigh to be a major city, so go for it. my house has aluminum 
siding on it, and the signal comes in good. it gets spotty in the center 
carrying the boom box but all in all, it does quite well.

the boom box has a headphone jack just to the left of the
volume control underneath.
I wouldn't think you would have any trouble getting one of the satellites 
along the coast.
