Hi all

Just another question about this for which there is probably not really an
answer.

Are there some music which can actually be e.g. ripped to mp3 format without
really losing too much or no sound quality?

I am thinking now of e.g. music recorded in the fifties and sixties, single
instruments or people singing with very small accomponiments?

Just curious.

Andre

Hi Mari.

Not a stupid question at all - the myriad of formats are definitely
confusing until you get more acquainted with digital music.

Basically, lossless means that nothing has been taken away from the music
during compression. So, all of your high and low frequencies are left
intact and therefore the quality of the source music is preserved.

The opposite of lossless is known as lossy. This covers formats like MP3
and WMA files ripped at lower bit rates. With lossy compression, some of
the high and low frequencies are lost to compress the music down into the
smallest space possible. There are also a number of psycho-acoustic
techniques used to remove parts of the music that is deemed will not be
missed by the listener such as quieter sounds that happen to be playing
whilst there is a louder sound almost obscuring it. All formats have their
own proprietary algorithms that dictate how the music is processed and
that's why it's never a good idea to convert from one lossy format to
another.

Lossless files take up a lot more disc space than lossy formats and so it's
worth bearing this in mind when deciding on what format to use.

Regards.

Kevin
