Hi. I have this problem on my laptop. I solved it by buying a microphone that you put batteries in. It does quite well with volume level. I do get CPU noise, but I think that's due to the sound card I'm using. I got it from Radio Shack. It cost me somewhere around $25. Battery life is decent in it. It uses 2 AAA batteries. It's a boom mike, and the batteries go in the bottom of the base that's on the microphone.
