Don,

I'm using XP. I did as you described, and found that both primary and 
secondary IDE controllers were already set to DMA If Available. That leads 
me to suspect that, perhaps, that isn't the problem, after all, contrary to 
Jukka's suggestion.

Perhaps, since I hear chip prices are soon to start falling again, I should 
just invest in 2gigs of ram, boost my system resources, and see if that'll 
improve Easy CD-DA Extractor's on-the-fly performance.
