The Apple Mac computers have always had reasonable speech ever since
I can remember first playing with one in 1989 and it certainly hasn't
gotten any worse in the various revisions and new voices that come
shipped with OS Tiger, a new range of voices will be shipped with OS
Lepard and if you really want top quality speech then you can get the
Infovox voices, they're the best voices I've ever heard out of any
computer system and the most natural sounding human-like voices
you'll get anywhere.
There is a link to a demo of the new OS Lepard voices and the Infovox
voices so I'll dig that out.

Its amazing just how many people who sell Mac machines aren't aware
of this,
when I first went to look at a Mac over a year ago at my local Mac
reseller,
I bowled him over by following a simple instruction someone else had
given
me which was, "To activate the OS tiger VoiceOver screen Reader, boot
up the
Mac machine and press
command-F5 and hold down the FN key whilst doing this if you're using a
notebook", did the trick alright and I've been using my Ibook ever
since.
