Am I misunderstanding you, or are you not aware that the Mac has VoiceOver, which is its own spoken screen access built into Tiger or Leopard OS. I understand that VoiceOver has a way to go, but I'm still rather glad it's there. The more options we have, the better.
Anyway, let's keep our ears pealed for evidence of ways to speak messages without using modeless dialogs or message boxes.
