Hi, Dane: This is technically the wrong list for you to get these kinds of answers, although I'm sure some will be or already have been forthcoming. And yes, I should say, keyboards, not to mention sequencing software, has changed a lot in twelve years! State-of-the-art software is, of course, Sonar and the CakeTalking scripts from David Pinto/Dancing Dots. SOTA keyboards, I couldn't even begin to tell you, it's largely a matter of what kinds of sounds you like, and what hardware you can get to make them. Some folks live on softsynths or soundfonts alone and just use a controller (no sounds) to play them. Come on over to the MIDI-MAG group and ask your question there, I'm sure you'll get a gazillion replies.
