I believe two concerns are getting confused here.  cheap disks won't hold up
nearly as long as the brand names.  This is particularly true with DVD
disks.  Another concern is the rate at which formats become obsolete.
Consider the floppy.  You can hardly give them away now.  The article I read
in, Smart computing, advised people to be careful and not purchase cheap
disks if they intended to keep records on them for long periods of time.
The article was addressing a home audience so they spoke mainly of photo
storage.

But I thought that when CD's first came out they showed much promise,
because the disks weren't supposed to wear out because nothing was supposed
to touch them!
