Well, a few of those controls won't speak, but most of the important ones do. Nine times out of 10, I just press control+R followed by alt+R, and I'm recording. I don't often have to change any parameters in that dialogue.

I use Sound Forge and Studio Recorder to record all kinds of things in Windows Vista, and they work very well. Some sound card drivers are apparently better than others, but you get that with new operating systems until things sort themselves out.
