it is a matter of preference, sometimes in certain situations you want a 
stand alone machine. if your computer is down, you won't copy anything. your 
computer might be tied up and you don't have the computer resources to do 
any copying at the time. you are also talking portability. if you get the 
right duplicator, you can carry it in a backpack. then there is the cost of 
the computer which is going to exceed the cost of the copier. if someone 
doesn't know how to put in the drives on the computer that is another 
expense. maybe people like granny don't  have the knowhow to use a computer 
so a copier makes it easier for her to copy discs for her bingo buddies 
while she reads her email done on the hp mailbox printer utilizing presto 
services. to wrap it up, the machines are out their, if you don't want to 
use them, you don't have to, it is a nice alternative if you choose to use 
it.
