Question About File Extention Name

Hi list:  Today someone sent me some music files..but they are what they call 
".m4a" files; I have no idea of what they are; I only know that Total Recorder 
won't convert them to MP3's (or any other thing)..it's telling me that the file 
name is invalid or one that is not supported!  So what is a ".m4A?
