K-NFB Reading Technology, a company which you would think should have the
blind as their highest priority, has released the long-awaited Blio eReader
today. After it was announced in January with glowing promises that it
would bring access to a million books to blind readers, K-NFB Reading
Technology, a joint venture of the National Federation of the Blind and
Kurzweil Technologies, has released a version of the Blio eReader that is
not accessible to screen readers. They promise on the download page that an
accessible version of Blio will be available in October, but they've missed
so many release dates, I'll believe it when it happens. How can we expect
companies to release accessible software from day one when a company in
which one of the partners is a national blindness organization doesn't even
follow this principle?
To make matters worse, I just got an email message from K-NFB Reading
Technology telling me about all of the books I can read with the Blio
eReader. It reminds me of all of those messages from AMAZON.COM about the
Kindle PC software.
