I choose better codecs over ease of use any day, but that's just me. If something works for you and produces the results you want, then carry on using what you feel comfortable with.

Just a note: .mpg files are MPEG-4 videos, not audio files.  If you
download Audacity and the FFmpeg plug-in, as well as the Lame codec for
Audacity, you'll be able to import the video and then export it as a new
format such as MP3, OGG, etc.
