Neat, most AirPlay speakers I've used can utilise a similar setup procedure to what you've outlined.
I was most interested in your description of the sound of the unit and I think I know very well what you're talking about, I have another AirPlay system here, the Thompson which exhibits similar characteristics and I believe I know why, that system has for its drivers 2 tweeters, 2 passive radiators and 2 sub-woofers, its not unpleasant to listen to by any means but you do need to fill in a little of the mid range detail for yourself.
