A switch is for two machines (A-B) and a hub can be for 3 or more..... both 
from a server.
I have ethernet cards in most of my older Macs, later ones have it on the 
logic boards.
With just 2 machines a pass thru cable is all you need. 

I'll pass on your quiry to a friend who runs a network for a major Chicago 
hospital...he's my PC expert localy and is why I'm chagrined to find that 
even people like him don't "love" and are basicly afraid of their PC's in  
away I've not seen from Mac Heads....
