You might try using Eudora or some non-microsnooze email system. They don't seem to have the hangups about servers and as a bad timeout limits that express as express does. (as well as not being made by the dark side) I've never checked my mac.com account from the web and don't know if mac.com email is web-enabled but if so you could login to itools and see if you can check the email or forward from the faulty account.
