The 8500 would be fine. Just use it's external SCSI (5MB/sec) and burn away at 4x or better, no problem.
FWIW, I use my old Centris 660AV (25 screemin' MHz) for an external SCSI Panasonic burner. Works just fine. Connected it via ethernet to my 8600/G3/500, so it doesn't tie up my DAW machine. Copy the files to the HD for best performance.
