Generally it is used in usenet and involves heaping abuse upon the 
ignorant. You are suppose to read the FAQ and get up to speed on the 
topic and content of the news group before you post. And if you do not 
and breach some matter of netiquette you are ridiculed to no end. More 
generally it just refers to the heaping of abuse upon someone.

The first known mention of "flaming" in this type of context occurs in 
Chaucer's "Troilus and Cressida". Cressida laments her inability to 
grasp a mathematical theorem and her Uncle Pandarus observes that it is 
called "the fleminge of wrecches" meaning in the context of the story 
"that which puts wretches to flight" of course using a more usenet 
compatible prose one ends up with "flaming of the wretches". In any 
event the purpose it to let you know that you (or at least your topic or 
point of view) are not wanted.

Knowing this and having a dollar will get you a soda in many parts of 
the USA.
