Hmmm, well, can't answer too many of your questions, but will give a stab 
at two.

First, the drive may be damaged or "frozen" due to age. Hard to say. It 
is removed from the case by first disconnecting the two cables (power and 
IDE interface). The lifting up on the plastic tab on the "sled" and 
pulling it forward. Sometimes tight, may have to use needlenose pliers to 
"encourage" it to move.

After you get it out, you can sometimes get them to "go" by holding them 
horizontally and then "twisting" them about their horizontal axis a few 
times, reinstalling and giving them another try.

As for why the drive can't be seen, that is a mystery. For some reason it 
is not starting. If you launch "Drive Setup" from the CD, does it see the 
drive?
