Microsoft has always been notorious for exploiting undocumented system
quirks with their software. Early versions of Word for the Mac
regularly broke with System software upgrades. It sounds like Word 4 is
using an unsupported memory range that isn't available on a Power PC
Mac. If you're determined to get Word 4 working, here are some things
to try:

Double or triple the 'desired' and 'required' memory settings
                for the application
Try running it with virtual memory off
Start up from a System 7.5.3 disk (probably the oldest system
you can) and run it from there.
Run a 68K Mac emulator, such as vMac or Basilisk II, on your
9500 and run Word within that virtual machine
Pick up a compact Mac, like an SE or SE/30 or even an LC and
Run Word 4 on that machine.

A Type 3 error is, indeed, a memory error, but it's not generally a
matter of how much, but which memory addresses. From Knowledge Base
article 12670:

"Type 1, 2, and 3 errors are Mac OS memory-addressing errors. These are
usually caused by incompatible software or software conflicts.

"System software compatibility issues usually occur with older
software. If your software falls into this category, contact the
software vendor for an updated version of the software that works with
your installed system software version."
