Oh Great Oracle of Opinions....
;-)

I have a question concerning ethernet. I have two lil' tiny networks, one at
home and one at work, each consisting of Macs linked together using
Ethernet/Appletalk. They consist of:

HOME-PMac 7600, Duo Dock(+duo laptop) and a x-over RJ-45 cable.

OFFICE-Pmac 7600, Pmac 7300, Duo Dock(+duo laptop) w/ a Farrallon Etherwave
and a couple of RJ-45s...

- in each network, the PMac 7600 is the main computer -

I have noticed that when I startup the PMac 7600 at HOME, IF the Duo linked
to it is not already started up, I get a message telling me that the 7600's
AppleTalk is switching from the ethernet connection to a serial port
connection. When the linked Duo is already on, then the 7600 starts up in
AppleTalk via ethernet, as it should.

But at the OFFICE, when the 7600 is started, it starts up w/ AppleTalk via
the ethernet connection whether the two other Macs linked to it are running
or not. Why isn't the 7600 at HOME able to startup in ethernet/AppleTalk also
if it is the only computer up?

Now I know it cannot be the Etherwave device that is doing it, because once I
had it connecting two Duos to a PMac 7600, and it would not startup using
AppleTalk via ethernet unless at least one of the Duos was started up.

Therefore, I have deduced that it is the fact that my OFFICE network has
ANOTHER DESKTOP linked to it that allows it to stay in AppleTalk via ethernet
at startup. Please confirm/deny this hypothesis of mine, and IF THE IS A WAY
to startup both 7600s in AppleTalk/ethernet, please inform me.

Thanks,
Craig W.
