Not having a sled won't harm the drive unless you move the computer without care. I also doubt that it is actually sitting on the controller card. There should be about 1/16-1/8 in space between the components and the surface that the drive is sitting on. BUT, it would be advisable to put it on a sled..... ;-) Yes, the drive will get get warm or possibly hot.
