If you're using OS 9.x.x open sound control panel (there's an icon on the

strip) to see if "Sound in" (intenal CD) is checked.

I had a problem simlar with my CD Rom drive. Someone omn the list tol;d me to 
check that the drive audio cable was connected securely to the mobo. Turns 
out it was completely unplugged from vibrations. Worth checking.
