The Mac didn't chime at startup, but that was only because the sound output was wired to the TFT display, and for some reason the display's speakers didn't chime. I pulled the cable out. Afterwards the Mac chimed but didn't boot. Then I resetted the parameter RAM, and that was it. I had pressed the kuda button on the motherboard before resetting the PRAM, and thought that would be enough to reset the PRAM (and much more). Obviously, the kuda button does something else.
