Dear R.A.
The 8600 case has three 'dummy' PCI blanks which can be remove to
accomodate the 9600 board. The additional memory slots pose no
problem.
One consideration is with additional drives mounted on the bottom
of the case. If we use all six PCI slots, the front drive will be
crowded out by most cards.
Perhaps Apple sought economy by manufacturing one case which could
house at least two mobos and be sold as two (actually more, when you
consider the workstation/server configurations) separate retail units.
In nature survival is to the fittest. In commerce, it seems,
survival is granted to the efficient. The trick seems to be to be
elegantly efficient- that is, to pull an Apple out of one's hat.

Best wishes,

James Reid
