When I put a CD in my 7500's drive today, the drive started rattling, grinding, and spinning incessantly. The CD icon eventually appeared on the desktop, but double-clicking on it produced the same symptoms. A window opened and then the Mac froze and I had to do a restart.

So here are my questions:

1) Does anyone recognize the symptoms, and if so can the drive be repaired?

2) Is there software similar to Disk First Aid or TechTool Pro for CD-ROM drives?

3) The big one: Can I take the CD-ROM drive from my old Performa 6220 and install it in the 7500? Assuming that the drive in the Performa is the factory original, it is an AppleCD 600i 4x drive. The drive in the 7500, according to Apple System Profiler, is a Matshita CR-8005, also a 4x.

4) If the swap can be done, how difficult is it to do? The most I've ever done inside a Mac was install a Comm Slot modem in the 6220. I suspect this would be more complicated.

Thanks for any help you can give.
