If such switches exist, are they 1) cheap, and 2) reliable?
Yes they exist, yes they are cheap, yes they're reliable.
I have one here at work to switch a monitor between my PC and my mac web server.
It's a QVS 'Manual Data Switch AB Data Switch VGA Monitor' model CA298-2. It's an ugly old beige box with a single rotating switch in it and it cost me all of $15 new at a local electronics store.
