Is there a real RAM limit after which VM won't work?

*YES*

I'm surprised you could even turn VM on. When I upgraded my 8600 with a gig of ram, I wanted to see what VM and a gig a ram would be capable of. But when I opened the memory control panel it said VM was disabled due to the ram being at it's max limit.( OS 9.2) Also - it's been my experience that apps/docs calling for VM to be enabled are more of a throw back to the days when ram was a major major expense, I remember when a 16 meg 72 pin simms cost $500. I have to believe the makers of such products must have expected to see a lot of people attempting to use their products with low amounts of physical ram installed and then bog their support people when the product didn't function properly. My understanding was that VM was always just a band aid for low physical ram anyways.

At any rate, did you try ignoring all this nonsense, just turning VM off, and running the USB cam to see what would happen?

Also, why we're on the subject of USB cams, has anyone come up with a "universal" usb cam driver for os x?
I saw were I think it was inotech that has one, but it really only covers a few of the bigger name cam makers and it's not free.
Anyone know of another?

HTH.
