>The 9600/G3 becomes slow when it's printing, and also the screen isvery jerky at those times. Ideas? Can't be memory... does it with 1.5gb of RAM (but currently running 768mb).
Why should it do this? --
Print spooling (especially graphics) uses up resources and ties up the Mac (the cpu divides its time between spooling/printing/screen redraw/mouse control, etc.) until the job is finished. Try allocating more memory to the Desktop Print Monitor extension and the printer's icon (get info command) to speed things a bit. Unfortunately Print Spooler extension is fixed at 72k (9.1).
Thanks! I've given it 1000k and boosted the minimum to the minimum level (it was set below this).
I have this problem when printing to my old HP DeskWriter. But since upgrading to LaserWriter 8.6
What application is this? The only printer driver my Mac will access is LaserWriter 8.
(then 8.7 when I went to OS 9.2.2), it hasn't occured when printing on our Xerox printer. Nor does it occur when printing to our Epson printer, using their drivers.
Note that the print drivers all use the boot volume as scratch space to generate the spool file. If you don't have lots of free memory and free disk space for them to do their rasterizing... things can slow down considerably.
Thanks. I have at present 768mb RAM and a 36gb boot HD which is far from full, so these shouldn't be a problem. It did this with 1.5gb RAM too.
I have looked for printer drivers. nothing in my Extensions and Find doesn't find anything "drivers'. Perhaps lack of a driver is part of my Chooser problem? I have a LaserWriter Pro 630 printer description, but doubt this is a driver(?). I bought the printer used and it didn't come with any software, but I have been using it for some years now.
