Yes, I believe that along with many other Mac's you can only use an Apple
plain-talk mic, it has a longer jack than standard as the port provides
power to it (it has a line amplifier built in), you used to be able to buy
an adapter to use a standard mic with these, however I have never used one
and don't know if they are still made, I believe that you can also use the
line-out of a hi-fi pre-amp to drive it.
